Future Food and Composting

Check it out.  Old food becomes new food.  Does this not make the most sense for the world? I have climbed upon my high horse, which is also white and possibly a unicorn.  The compost barrel is in the ground and yes, it is fully covered with snow.  See??

So while this post is not directly related to the food I am cooking and eating, it is related to the future food that will be created from its past.  Essentially, my carrots will bear carrots.  How AWESOME is that?  Not awesome, like the power of God awesome.  God has nothing to do with it.   The Lords of Kobol, maybe...  I apologize for the BSG joke.

The city of Boston subsidizes the price of compost bins for its inhabitants.  So all you need to do is take a quick trip to Mission Hill and spend 50 bucks.  Retail goes for well over 100 so this is a good deal.

Then, you dig up a little soil and save it.  Screw the bin into the ground and start filling it up with carbon and nitrogen rich materials! So far we have put 2 scrap-bin-fuls of kitchen waste in there with some cardboard and a little bit of soil.  Veggie peelings and scraps, fruit, coffee filters and grinds, tea bags, pasta, rice, some paper towels.  Already our production of waste has gone way down! And by the time spring rolls around, the material will be ready to decompose quickly! I think over the weekend, I'll get in there and turn all the yummy garbage.

Next order of business is buying materials for starting seedlings indoors, including seeds! Shopping time! This is one thousand more times exciting than buying clothes or something.

Have any composting secrets you'd like to share? Please do!

Oh, and this Mr. Giles' new favorite spot.  Or maybe he just likes Veronica Mars.

Later gators.
